Cymbidiums, or boat orchids, are native to Asia and Australia, where they grow at the higher altitudes in the temperate zone. The name is derived from the Greek word kumbos, meaning 'hole, cavity,' referring to the opening at the lip of the flower. When the evenings are cool and days warm, cymbidiums will send up long flower spikes that cascade with elegant, waxy blooms. Cymbidiums are characterized by a face-like structure with a elongated lip that helps in their pollination. Cymbidiums are one of the most popular and desirable orchids in the world because of their beautiful flowers and easy care and ability to live outdoors. They have been cultivated for thousands of years in China and became popular in Western culture during the Victorian era in England. The flower in this image is the quintessential cymbidium with a nearly perfect form.
