The flowers of the silver vase bromeliad seem otherworldly. In early fall, a bright pink spear appears out of a rosette of silver-green leaves. As the flower opens, vivid blue and purple flowers emerge out of the spear. The entire display looks like a bouquet of flowers. In their native habitat in tropical America, these plants grow as epiphytes in tree crevices, taking water and nourishment from the air. The flower in this photo had just emerged from its vase-like base in my garden in Los Angeles. I was lucky to capture it before the sun could fade its brilliant colors.
