Since 5,000 B.C., poppies have been grown as ornamental plants, and in ancient Greece, they were associated with the goddess of agriculture, Demeter. After they flower, Iceland poppies disperse their tiny seeds onto the ground, where they may lie dormant for years before emerging. With their crepe paper faces, poppies cannot help but make you smile. I looked at dozens of poppies before I selected the flower for this image. I was attracted by its perfection.
